Asheville, NC, February 16, 2011, Dr. Irma Ruth Williams, Board Certified Anesthesiologist for Asheville VA Medical Center, has been recognized by Elite American Physicians for dedication, leadership and achievements in anesthesiology.
Dr. Williams’ involvement in medicine is inextricably tied to her love for her family. She entered the profession 16 years ago, inspired by the orthopedic surgeon who operated on her brother for cerebral palsy. Dedicated since then to helping others, she has spent majority of her career at Asheville VA Medical Center, where she treats patients like her father, a veteran of WWII and the Korean conflict. Specialized in anesthesia, Dr. Williams practices preoperative medicine, works with geriatric and bariatric patients, and trains medical students and residents at all levels.
Licensed to practice in the states of South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Texas and California, Dr. Williams obtained an MD in 1988 from the Medical University of South Carolina. She also earned a Bachelor of Medical Science in 1975 from Emory University and a Bachelor of Arts in 1969 from The University of North Carolina at Asheville. A diplomate of The American Board of Anesthesiology, she maintains affiliation with the Florida Society of Anesthesiologists and the American Society of Anesthesiologists.
Respected by her peers, Dr. Williams was listed by the Consumers’ Research Council of America as a “Top Anesthesiologist” in 2011 and 2009 and as a “Top Physician” from 2003 to 2005. Additionally, she was named “Professional of the Year in Anesthesiology” in 2008 and 2007 by Cambridge Who’s Who, and was honored in 2008 with a Woman of the Year for Community Service and Professional Achievement. As she moves forward in her career, Dr. Williams plans to continue treating veterans and teaching future medical personnel.
