NEW ORLEANS, LA, October 11, 2012, Howard H. Russell, Jr., MD, Physician, has been recognized by Elite American Health Professionals for dedication, achievements, and leadership in internal medicine.

Dr. Russell spent many years working as an internist at a private practice. He also conducted kidney research and assisted with patient evacuations during Hurricane Katrina. He is the medical director of two nursing homes in New Orleans. At 71 years old, he is determined to continue practicing medicine, having promised his wife to keep working for as long as he was healthy. Dr. Russell volunteers his time treating patients who cannot afford health care.

As a physician, Dr. Russell is primarily responsible for managing patient care, making house calls for elderly patients, and conducting medical consulting. He also offers home health services, instructs on hospice care, and serves as the medical director for two nursing homes. He is a recipient of the Medical Director of the Year Award, as granted by the Louisiana Nursing Home Association, and he has had multiple listings in the Best Doctors in America catalog and in the “Top Doctors” segment of New Orleans Magazine. Additionally, Dr. Russell has received First Place recognition for Best Bedside Manner from Tenet Health System Medical, Inc.

In addition to his professional accomplishments, Dr. Russell is proud to have actively participated in evacuating all the patients from his clinic during Hurricane Katrina. He stayed through the storm and unfortunately, he did lose his home and all his belongings. However, he did return to New Orleans, where he continues to practice medicine, a profession that he has faithfully stood by for over 40 years. Of the many maxims and adages that Dr. Russell has picked up over the course of a successful career, those that have rang true include the following: “You have to be honest, but you do not have to be stupid;” “No better fun than after a job well done;” “Your head is a valuable organ, if you use it;” and “Pretty is as pretty does.” A well-learned and erudite physician, Dr. Russell continues to make every effort to continue a family legacy that was instituted by his great-grandfather, and carried on through his grandfather, both of whom were doctors. He is Board eligible in Internal Medicine, Allergy and Nephrology, and he received an MD from Tulane University School of Medicine, and completed a Residency in Internal Medicine.
