Dr. Howard H. Russell, Jr. is a physician specializing in internal medicine, allergies and nephrology. At the helm of his private practice, Dr. Russell manages patient care, makes house calls for elderly patients, and offers home health services. He also serves as the medical director of two nursing homes, conducts medical consulting services, and instructs on hospice care. “I would like people to think of me as being honest, caring and compassionate,” Dr. Russell expressed in a recent interview with EliteAMERICAN Publishing. A combination of the compassionate care that he provides to his patients and the hard work that he has put into his career throughout the past 48 years has allowed him to flourish; Dr. Russell has achieved multiple listings in the Best Doctors in America and in the “Top Doctors” segment of New Orleans Magazine. He has also received First Place recognition for Best Bedside Manner from Tenet HealthSystem Medical, Inc.
When reflecting on how he was able to successfully thrive in the field of internal medicine, Dr. Russell said: “Diseases affect one part and then they affect another; I wanted to treat the total patient. That’s why I got into internal medicine as opposed to one specialty.” Dr. Russell spent many years working as an internist at a private practice. He also conducted kidney research and assisted with patient evacuations during Hurricane Katrina. He is the medical director of two nursing homes in New Orleans. At 71 years old, he is determined to continue practicing medicine, having promised his wife to keep working for as long as he was healthy. Dr. Russell volunteers his time treating patients who cannot afford health care.
Over the course of an illustrious career, Dr. Russell has come to realize many things; he is grateful to have grown to recognize that God heals, and doctors get paid. Among Dr. Russell’s many words of wisdom, some standouts include “You have to be honest, but you do not have to be stupid;” “No better fun than after a job well done;” “Your head is a valuable organ, if you use it;” and “Pretty is as pretty does.” He remains abreast of trends and developments in medicine as a member of the Louisiana State Medical Society and the American College of Physicians, and as a Clinical Professor of Medicine at the Tulane University School of Medicine.
